Canada's finest hotels, chosen with care
We don't list everything — we choose. A small, considered collection of the boutique icons, grand landmarks and resort escapes worth planning a journey around, reviewed by writers who stayed the night.
The Hazelton Hotel, Yorkville
Five stays worth the journey
From a hushed boutique house in Yorkville to a castle in the Rockies, a harbour icon on two coasts and a pair of resort escapes with a casino on site — each one visited in person and reviewed without flattery. Tap any card for the full story.
A curator's eye, not an endless list
Aurora Stays began in Halifax in 2016 as a private list of the hotels our founding editor kept recommending to friends. It grew into a small, independent review house — and a deliberately short one.
We are not a booking engine and we are not owned by a hotel group. Our writers pay their own way, stay anonymously where they can, and describe what really happens between check-in and check-out — the gracious touches and the frayed edges alike. We never publish prices, we never sell a kind word, and every review carries the name of the person who slept in the bed.
When a link here leads you to book a room, the property may pay us a small commission. That keeps the collection free to read — and it never earns a hotel a better score.
How we stay independent →
How a hotel earns its place in the edit
A consistent, four-step process sits behind every review you read.
We book & pay
Rooms are reserved the way any guest would — no comps, no "media rate", and no advance warning to the hotel.
We stay the night
Our writer lives in the room for at least one full night, testing the bed, the bathroom, the quiet, the Wi-Fi and the service.
We listen widely
We read hundreds of recent guest reviews so a single wonderful (or dreadful) night never skews the picture.
We write it plainly
A signed, first-person review with a clear verdict — praise where it's earned, and candour where it isn't.
Independent by design
No pay-to-play
A hotel cannot buy a place in the collection, a rating, or a kinder line. Scores are settled before a single commission is counted.
Real, signed writers
Every review carries the name of the correspondent who actually stayed there — meet all three on our writers page.
No prices, ever
Rates shift by the hour and mislead more than they help. We describe the experience and let you book direct at the source.
